Italian woman spent savings on stray cats Milan, Italy | August 15, 2007 12:01:13 AM IST
An elderly Italian woman is spending thousands of dollars a month feeding 120 stray cats in Milan. Albertina Di Mascio, who doles out $2,040 on cat food each month, tops the nation's Tattare, or Cat Ladies, the Italian news agency ANSA reported Tuesday. The 70-year-old retiree said she's used up all her savings over the past 15 years, and is using most of her and her husband Giuseppe's combined income. Each day the homeless felines get 60 tins of food, a half-gallon of milk, 7 1/2 gallons of water and about 6 1/2 pounds of cat biscuits. I can't go wild and buy lots of things, but we are not dying of hunger and we no don't have the teeth to eat steak anyway, she said, noting her husband is an animal-lover too. She says it all started when her daughter asked her to take care of a stray near her home. While she says her work keeps her healthy, says she hasn't been able to stop herself. If I had to give someone advice, I'd say don't begin in the first place, she said. (UPI)
