Kiriyenko to visit India to discuss cooperation in nuke technology
Moscow | April 04, 2006 8:37:24 PM IST

Chief of Russia’s Federal Nuclear Power Agency (Rosatom) Sergei Kiriyenko will arrive in India on a two-day visit on Thursday to discuss bilateral cooperation in nuclear technology and nuclear power engineering.

Spokesman for the Rosatom Sergei Novikov today said Mr Kiriyenko will arrive in Mumbai and participate in a conference on 'Nuclear Fuel Cycle 2006.' He is expected to present a Russian nuclear power industry development programme for the period ending in 2030.

''After visiting Hongkong, the Rosatom chief along with the chairman of Atomic Energy Commission Anil Kakodkar will proceed to Mumbai and on April 6-7 Mr Kiriyenko will familiarise himself with the process of building two power units at India's Kudankulam nuclear power station which is being built by Russian specialists,'' Mr Novikov told Itar-Tass news agency.

He said leaders of the atomic energy agencies from India and Russia the countries will discuss prospects for development of cooperation between the two countries in the field of high nuclear technologies and nuclear power engineering.

Mr Kiriyenko will visit the Kudankulam nuclear power station in Tamil Nadu with Mr Kakodkar.

His visit to India, in wake of recent Russian supply of 60 tonnes of nuclear fuel for the two reactors at the Tarapur Atomic Power Station, is considered key to the further cooperation in the field of nuclear energy between the two countries, sources said.

The two sides are also expected to discuss the prospects of constructing additional reactors at the Kudankulam. Earlier Russia had offered to build four more 1,000 MW reactors at the Kudankulam.
