ICC backs Pakistan to host Champions Trophy Colombo | July 24, 2008 8:05:07 PM IST
Ending days of speculation regarding the Champions Trophy, the International Cricket Council Thursday backed Pakistan to host the eight-nation tournament in September. After several countries expressed apprehension about playing in Pakistan due to the volatile security situation in the country, the ICC Board Thursday held a tele-conference with the member countries here. "The decision of the Board is that the event remains in Pakistan," ICC said in a statement. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had strongly backed Pakistan to host the Champions Trophy and was against any move to shift the tournament out of the country. Several cricketers from Australia, New Zealand, England and South Africa had said they would back out of the tournament if the Champions Trophy is held in Pakistan. Federation of International Cricketers Association (FICA) and Australian Cricketers Association (ACA) had strongly pitched for a change of venue.av/dg (167 Words)24071940NNNN (IANS)
