Manchester bans big screens for Champion League Final fearing violence
Manchester | May 16, 2008 4:29:45 PM IST

The Champions League Final will not be shown on big screens in Manchester following the Rangers riots, council chiefs have said.

They had considered erecting screens to show Manchester United take on Chelsea on next Wednesday.

But council leader Sir Richard Leese said that he did not want a repeat of the violence, which caused destruction and disruption to 20,000 city centre residents.

United fan Tony Keenan, of St Albans, Herts, last night slammed the decision.

He said: "I'm furious. I couldn't go to Moscow but hoped there would be a great atmosphere watching the match with other fans in Manchester. Now that is off as well."

The Russian government on Thursday urged English fans turning up to watch Wayne Rooney's team taking on Chelsea to behave "respectfully".

Drinking will be banned on the streets, and there will be no big screens to watch the match, The Mirror reported.

Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko said police and military would control the event in a "proper and calm way". (ANI)
