World Cup manager Dehring thanks stake holders for support Bridgetown (Barbados) | April 29, 2007 4:15:06 PM IST
Chris Dehring, managing director of the World Cup, thanked all the stake holders for their hard work and support for the event as the curtains came down on the 2007 final with Australia defending the title against Sri Lanka here. "I cannot thank everyone enough. Putting on this event has been a collective undertaking, by a huge team of people throughout Caribbean. Their actions have ensured the successful delivery of this tournament and the results of their hard work have been showcased for the world to see," said Dehring. "It's been amazing to see everything unfold - 51 matches in 47 days in nine countries - and I have to say that I am so proud to be a part of a great team. None of this would have happened without the dedication and commitment of the thousands of personnel who have been involved with this event for several years," he said Saturday. "So many people have devoted their time and energy in the most outstanding fashion. The commitment to delivering a world-class event has been unceasing and I cannot praise everyone enough," said Dehring, who has spearheaded the West Indies Cricket Board's (WICB) bid to host the sporting spectacle for the past ten years. He saluted the Local Organising Committees (LOCs) in particular as they have had the responsibility of delivering numerous aspects of the tournament from the recruitment of the volunteers, to the building of venues and the management of transportation plans. "When I look back at each of the countries that have played a part in hosting this tournament, I know that every single one of them did their best not only to meet the requirements but also, where possible, to exceed them," said Dehring. Chief Executive Officer of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), David Collier, was equally complimentary in his assessment of how well the Caribbean has handled this responsibility. "This is my fifth visit to the Caribbean and I think the legacy of this Event is that the grounds are all magnificent. It's a huge step forward in terms of the quality of stadia. The logistics of organising this event are tough even over one country. I have to say, really well done," he said. "This has taken West Indies cricket to a different league. It's fantastic! I couldn't praise Chris Dehring and his team enough."abr/rn (IANS)
