World Cup registers more than 425,000 spectators

The grand finale at the Kensington Oval Saturday will bring down the curtains on the World Cup, taking the number of spectators during this 49-day tournament to more than 425,000. "This has been a watershed moment in Caribbean history and, regardless of the challenges which the region has faced throughout this journey, it is a collective achievement of which we can all be proud as West Indians," said Chris Dehring, managing director of the tournament. "Now, we need to complete the job and deliver the final on a world-class level, as we have done in various areas of operation throughout this event," he said. More than 25,000 tickets have already been sold for the final match of the World Cup between Sri Lanka and defending champions Australia. On an average, 8,300 fans have watched each of the 51 tournament matches with 9,231 and 13,875 people having attended the semi-finals in Jamaica and Saint Lucia respectively. (IANS)
