Chances bright for Australia to lift World Cup: Steve Waugh
Hyderabad | April 27, 2007 10:43:00 AM IST

Former Australian Cricket Captain Steve Waugh today said chances were bright for Australia to win the world cup.

Waugh, who was in the city on a private visit, told media that only a miracle can prevent Australia from the third consecutive world cup victory.

''Anything is possible in cricket. The great innings of VVS Laxman prevented us from the 17th consecutive test victory at Eden Gardens in 2001. Sri Lankans are great fighters and they will fight it out till the final moment,'' he added.

Replying to a question he said, ''Aussies have lived up to everybody's expectations. Each player contributed for the team's success. I praise Ricky Ponting for his captaincy skills.'' Referring to India's early exit from the world cup, he said the main reason for India's debacle was flat fielding.

On Sachin he said, ''He should decide himself. Others should not put pressure on him. In Australia we will not consider injured and unfit players for selection. Look at fast bowler Brett Lee. His injury is very small but he was kept out of the team.'' On India's forthcoming tour to Bangladesh, he said ''It is not that easy. Bangladesh have improved a lot. India must raise its standards.'' To a question, he said '' I am not in the race for becoming Indian cricket coach. At present, I am pre-occupied with other activities.'' Commenting on Greg Chappell's role as Indian coach, he said ''Don't blame him. Coach's job is to teach game in nets and its the player who has to perform in the middle.'' UNI XR AJ DKA ND2218
