New West Indies skipper to be named on Sunday
Kingston Jamaica | April 26, 2007 7:15:07 AM IST

West Indies will announce a new captain, to replace the retired Brian Lara, when their board meet on Sunday.

The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) said the squad for next month's tour of England would be finalised once the new skipper had been appointed.

Lara retired from international cricket on Saturday and his vice-captain, 26-year-old Guyanese batsmen Ramnaresh Sarwan, has been widely tipped to take over.

Trinidad captain Daren Ganga, who did not feature in the World Cup squad, and opening batsmen Chris Gayle have also been suggested as possible successors.

WICB chief executive, Bruce Aanensen, said the selectors had already put forward their nomination to the board.

''The selectors have chosen somebody ... I'm not a liberty to divulge that name at the moment because we have to get the approval of the WICB for the nomination before any disclosure can be made,'' Aanensen told CMC Sports in an interview which was also published on the WICB's official website.

''The selectors said there were three people they were looking at. They had their meeting, we did not attend their meeting, we allowed them the privacy to discuss matters as they see fit. They have come up with one of the three.

''One of the things we are looking for is leadership skills ...

we are also looking a guy who will command the respect of the other players on the team, not somebody who will have any influence on the younger players in particular.'' West Indies play the first of four tests against England at Lord's on May 17 and they are also due to play three one-day games in July.

Lara's side had a disappointing World Cup in the Caribbean, winning just one of their six games in the Super Eights stage of the competition.
