Sri Lanka batsman Arnold to bid adieu after World Cup final Kingston Jamaica | April 26, 2007 7:04:28 AM IST
Sri Lanka batsman Russel Arnold has decided to call it a day from the international cricket after the World Cup final on Saturday. Announcing his decision after the 81-run semifinal win over New Zealand here yesterday, 33-year-old Arnold said he would like to take up coaching assignments afterwards. ''I think it is the right time. It's been 10 years and there have been ups and downs, but I have enjoyed every bit of it,'' he told The Island newspaper. ''I am going out without any regrets. I don't think I'll be playing competitive cricket any more, but I'll keep playing for the enjoyment. I definitely want to be involved in the sport in one way or another.'' Arnold has played 179 one-day internationals and 44 Test matches, since making his debut a decade ago. He was a regular member of the Sri Lanka side between 1999 and 2003. But due to sudden loss of form he was dropped from the team for almost two years before the selectors picked him up for the World Cup, where he has averaged 39 with the bat. ''I don't think I'll be playing competitive cricket any more, but I'll keep playing for the enjoyment,'' he said. ''I definitely want to be involved in the sport in one way or another,'' Arnold added. UNI HSB DH BD1915
