World Cup attendance soars past 400,000 Kingston (Jamaica) | April 24, 2007 3:15:06 PM IST
World Cup organisers have revealed that attendance at matches has broken the 400,000 mark. Figures following the conclusion of the Super Eights phase of the competition Saturday - and inclusive of 10,300 persons at the opening ceremony - indicated that over 403,000 fans have taken in the sporting spectacle thus far, with an average 8,500 supporters per match. The highest match attendance was a massive 22,452 at the Kensington Oval in Barbados for the England-West Indies clash in which Windies captain Brian Lara played his last international of a 17-year career. England's decisive Super Eight match against South Africa - also at Kensington - drew the second-highest attendance with 17,013 supporters. The West Indies versus Pakistan match had the third-highest attendance of 16,574, said an International Cricket Council (ICC) press release. Meanwhile, corrected statistics show that the India-Sri Lanka Group Stage game - initially reported to have been watched by more than 16,000 spectators - in fact had only 10,660 fans in attendance. More than 570,000 tickets have so far been sold and distributed for the event that began March 13 and ends April 28. (IANS)
