Lara fined in last international appearance
Bridgetown Barbados | April 23, 2007 6:43:52 AM IST

Batting great Brian Lara has been fined by the International Cricket Council (ICC) following his last appearance for West Indies because of his team's slow over rate during the final Super Eights match.

England and the hosts were both penalised for failing to complete their allocated overs on time in the thrilling World Cup second-round contest at the Kensington Oval yesterday.

The ICC ruled Michael Vaughan's side were two overs short and Lara's side one over behind their targets at the scheduled finish when time allowances were taken into consideration.

England won the match by one wicket and one ball to spare.

Both teams had no chance of reaching the semi-finals.

All players were fined five per cent of their match fees for every over their side failed to bowl in the allotted time and the captains were docked double that amount.

Consequently, Vaughan has been fined 20 per cent of his match fee and Lara 10 per cent.

The match was interrupted when Lara went out to bat and again when he was out as players formed a guard of honour in tribute to the 37-year-old who holds the records for the highest test and first-class scores.
