It was the right time to sign off: Brian Lara

Justifying his decision to retire from international cricket, an emotional Brian Lara today said that it was the right time for him to sign off as he was having no regrets and leaving the game with his head held high.

''I had a very long innings and I enjoyed it very much. It had to come to an end one day and it has ended,'' he said, adding, ''there is life without bat but for the present moment I just want to relax.'' While attending a crowded press conference after the last match of his illustrious career, Lara said, ''West Indies cricket is at a stage when change is necessary and I thought it is the time to leave and let the youngster take over.'' ''Physically I could not have done much for the West Indies team, so I saw no reason to continue and frankly I enjoyed my decision to quit because now I will have time for myself and my family,'' he added.

Commenting on the timing of his decision, the legend said, ''It's a nice way to go out, I have seen players like Richards, Greenidge and Marshal. They all wanted to go an extra step. At least I had the opportunity to say goodbye when I wanted and where I wanted.'' He, however, expressed his disappointment as the host were unable to qualify for the last four of the World Cup.

''I wanted to leave the team on a high note, I hoped that we will make it at least to the semi finals. If we had done that it would have been great but that was not to be, this is how life is,'' a disappointed Lara said.
