Shoaib Malik is Pakistan's new cricket captain Lahore | April 19, 2007 4:06:21 PM IST
As was expected, Pakistan batsman Shoaib Malik (25) was today named as the next captain of the Pakistan cricket team.Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Nasim Ashraf announced the decision at a press conference at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. Malik now becomes the 25th player to captain Pakistan. Malik had emerged the favourite after Younis Khan, the current vice-captain, turned down the offer. He has played 18 Tests and 137 One-day Internationals (ODIs), sometimes opening the batting. He can also bowl off-spin, but has twice been reported for an illegal action. PCB was inclined towards naming Malik as the next captain because it wanted to give the team a new look after their dismal World Cup exit. Some unidentified PCB sources had said that they chose Malik to succeed Inzamam-ul-Haq over more established names like Mohammad Yousuf because they wanted a fresh start. "Shoaib Malik is going to be the new captain. There is a consensus on his name, he is young and he is talented. We hope he will lift the team's performance. We want to give a new look to the national team and he is a good choice in that respect," they said. (ANI)
