We will win the World Cup, asserts Styris
St George's Grenada | April 19, 2007 4:42:05 AM IST

Ahead of their high-voltage Super Eight match against world champions Australia, New Zealand all-rounder Scott Styris has upped the ante, asserting that his side was peaking at the right time to have a go at the World Cup title.

The Kiwis, who are into the semi-finals for the fifth time in nine editions of the showpiece event, have never looked so good and Styris is convinced that they would do better than teams of the past.

''I am biased, but I think this is the first New Zealand side that is considered to have the first genuine opportunity to win it (World Cup title), Styris said.

''If we continue like this we will win the World Cup. In the past, a semi-final spot has been a fair result for some of those teams.

''This team here, if we hadn't made the semi-finals it would have been a failure. If we win it, then I think it's deserved.

If we don't, it will be disappointing.'' Regarding the match against their trans-Tasman neighbours here on Friday, Styris said, ''I'm sure Australia are still smarting a bit (from the 3-0 washout in New Zealand ahead of the World Cup) and we need to fight fire with fire. Against England and the West Indies we didn't let the foot off the gas, which has always been a problem for New Zealand sides in the past.'' ''Any time you play Australia you want to beat them. It's a great feeling, even in a so-called 'meaningless' game. Personally, I'm happy with the way I'm going about my innings, which is the thing that gets you good scores, particularly on these wickets,'' he added.
