Caribbean World Cup a big success, asserts Dehring
St George's Grenada | April 17, 2007 3:40:43 PM IST

The chief executive of 2007 World Cup, Chris Dehring has asserted that the Caribbean edition of the tournament is a huge success in terms of revenue from ticket sales.

He claimed that contrary to the reports about low turnout of fans, revenue from ticket sales were already ''double'' of the total ticket sales worth 10.5 million dollars as compared to the 2003 World Cup in South Africa.

''That's already a creditable showing when you compare South Africa's size, both in population and economy, with that of the West Indies,'' Dehring was quoted as having told a Jamaican newspaper.

According to Dehring, average attendance specifically at three Super Eights games, England-Sri Lanka, Bangladesh-South Africa and Australia-England was a shade under the 10,000 mark.

''If we continue on this trend as expected, our average attendance will be comparable with the previous CWC in South Africa, which was around 10,000 persons per game,'' he pointed out.

However, the organising committee head was of the view that the mega event would rebound from early exits of India and Pakistan.

''As certain teams continue to excel we anticipate seeing more nationals from those countries,'' he said, adding that 80 to 90 per cent of the tickets for the semi-finals had already been sold.

''You're always going to have fans who have tickets with the hope of supporting their team, but will always... be anxious to be there and be a part of history,'' Dehring said.
