PCB to announce captain and coach on May 7

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced that the new captain and coach for the national side would be named on May 7 just before the team's departure for a three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka at Abu Dhabi.

This was stated by the chairman of PCB, Nasim Ashraf, at a news conference here yesterday.

According to The News, the decision was deferred to May 7 after the ad-hoc committee meeting failed to finalise the candidates for the two high profile posts, as it was in no mood to act in haste and wants to address these issues only after a thorough evaluation by recommending suitable candidates for the respective jobs.

''The ad-hoc committee was of the view that these positions will be filled on May 7, before the national team proceeds to Abu Dhabi to play a three match series against Sri Lanka from May 10-15,'' Dr Ashraf was quoted as saying by The News.

Further, issuing a warning bell to the players, the PCB chairman said, ''The captain will be appointed on series to series basis and all the players have to justify their place in the team based on their individual performances and fitness standards.'' ''We will not be making any compromise on these standards and the players who can't stand up to the required standards will not be getting a place in the team, no matter how big or small they are in status,'' he added.

However, Dr Ashraf said that unlike the captain, the coach will be appointed on a two-year term.

The posts of coach and captain of Pakistan team remains unoccupied after the mysterious murder of their coach Bob Woolmer and skipper Inzamam-ul-Haq's subsequent retirement from international cricket after the national team's humiliating defeat at the hands of debutant Ireland, which resulted in their elimination from the group stages of the mega event.
