West Indies players to get richer despite poor show

Despite the poor show so far in the Super Eight phase of the cricket World Cup, West Indies players are in for a windfall as an independent committee ruled in favour of hike in players' share out of ICC largesse to the Windies Board. While the Indian board, after the team's debacle in the World Cup, has announced performance-based payment for the players, the West Indies players will earn anywhere between 110,000 and 180,000 dollar depending on seniority. The West Indies Cricket Board is also in touch with Mittal Steel, along with bat makers Slazenger, to step in as new team sponsors for the World Cup. According to media reports, the decision on payments came after a second ruling by an independent arbitration committee that first met on February 11 to settle a disagreement between the cricket board and the players' association. Interestingly, the decision came at a time when the World Cup is more than half way through and the West Indies are in danger of making their exit after having lost to Australia, New Zealand and Sri Lanka. As per the decision of the second arbitration, 15 players in the World Cup squad will split their 22 per cent share of 11.5 million dollar the WICB is receiving from International Cricket Council ''in accordance with a tiered, hierarchical formula as recommended by WIPA and accepted by WICB''. According to noted commentator Tony Cozier, ''The division of the ICC money is known to have been a sensitive matter among the senior players since fees are normally paid according to experience-based on their number of Tests and ODIs''. ''The WICB had initially offered the players a 13 per cent share of the 11.5 million dollar expected from the ICC but the arbitrators decided on 22 per cent along with an appropriate sum representing three per cent to go to a fund for the development of other regional cricketers''.
