Bangladeshis celebrate cricket win over South Africa

Bangladesh cricket fans took to the streets in thousands early Sunday, banging pots and dousing one another in coloured water to celebrate their national cricket side's 67-run victory over top-ranking South Africa. About extra 5,000 armed police were deployed to keep the partying within bounds when the country erupted after television coverage of the Super Eight match at the ICC World Cup in Guyana. Witnesses said a dozen revellers, hit by bottles and beer cans, were injured at a university campus in Dhaka among isolated incidents of violence in the otherwise peaceful celebrations which went ahead despite an official ban on public gatherings. Special editions of newspapers were out on the streets within hours as fans lit firecrackers, hooted car horns and waved national flags, with law-enforcers turning a blind eye in Dhaka and other cities around the country of more than 150 million. After batting first and scoring a Bangladeshi World Cup record score of 251-8, the Tigers went on to bowl out South Africa for just 184 in their latest success following their victory over India. --DPA (IANS)
