Dravid retained captain for Bangla, Ireland, England tours Mumbai | April 08, 2007 12:42:48 AM IST
The selection committee headed by Dilip Vengsarkar today retained Rahul Dravid as the captain of the Indian team for the tours of Bangladesh, Ireland and England. N Srinivasan, the treasurer of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), said at a press conference after the Working Committee meeting that the selectors had a tele conference this afternoon and decided to retain Dravid as the captain of the team. Srinivasan said the naming of the captain was done so fast to put to rest speculation in the media. He also said that Ravi Shastri has accepted the post of cricket manager only for the tour of Bangladesh and he will be assisted by Venkatesh Prasad as the bowling coach and Robin Singh will accompany the team as the fielding coach. All these three appointments will be only for the Bangladesh tour which begins on May 7. Srinivasan said this was done following the request by Dravid in yesterday's meeting. The treasurer also informed that the selection committee has been given a brief to select a young team under the leadership of an experienced captain. He, however, refused to comment on whether this would mean the end of the road of non-performing seniors, saying that this was for the selection committee to deliberate and decide.
