Indian cricket board scraps players' contract system Mumbai | April 07, 2007 7:15:06 PM IST
In the wake of Indian cricket team's poor performance in the World Cup, the national cricket board Saturday decided to scrap the players' contract system and also restrict cricketers' endorsements to three. "A lot of decisions were taken in today's working committee meeting. We have decided to introduce performance based payment and the present system of gradation will be done away with," said N. Srinivasan, treasurer of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) after the meeting here Saturday. "They will be paid incentives match wise and tour wise but I can't disclose you the amount because discussions are still going on," he added. The BCCI also decided to restrict players' involvement in endorsements to three at a time. "The board has no problem with how much money the players are making but the working committee felt that there should be a cap on it," said the board treasurer. The working committee decided that Rahul Dravid would be retained as the captain for the upcoming tours of Bangladesh, Ireland and England. Former all-rounder Ravi Shastri was appointed interim coach for the Bangladesh tour while Venkatesh Prasad and Robin Singh were named bowling and fielding coaches respectively. "Mr. Ravi Shastri is keen and enthusiastic and has agreed about it. After the Bangladesh tour we will review and then we will see what can be done," said Srinivasan. "The working committee has also instructed the selection committee to send a junior team for the Bangladesh tour." Srinivasan said that the board has decided to appoint a media manager and a team manager for the next two years and announced that the present zonal selection system will be abolished after the present committee finishes its term after two years. The board has also decided to send notice to Sachin Tendulkar and Yuvraj Singh for their reported comments in the media. (IANS)
