BCCI begins meetings to discuss World Cup debacle

The first of the two key meetings called to discuss the recent World Cup debacle in the West Indies started at the Wankhede Stadium here Friday amidst a huge media presence.

The meeting is being attended by office-bearers of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) along with captain Rahul Dravid, coach Greg Chappell, chairman of selectors Dilip Vengsarkar and team manager for the World Cup Sanjay Jagdale.

The nine BCCI officials include president Sharad Pawar, the five vice-presidents, secretary Niranjan Shah, joint secretary M.P. Pandove and treasurer N. Srinivasan.

Chappell, who resigned Wednesday after his contract ended with the World Cup, and Jagdale will present their World Cup reports to board president Pawar.

Sachin Tendulkar did not turn up -- it was speculated that Tendulkar, who had hit out at Chappell in an interview two days ago, would also be invited for the meeting at the BCCI headquarters in the stadium premises.

According to reports, Chappell has largely blamed the seniors for India's first-round exit from the World Cup with two defeats out of three matches. One of the defeats came against the supposed-to-be minnows Bangladesh.

The BCCI working committee will meet on Saturday where office bearers - read Pawar - will apprise the members of the discussions with Chappell, Dravid, Jagdale, Vengsarkar and others.

A large number of media personnel were present at the Wankhede Stadium from early morning. No outdoor broadcasting van of the television channels was allowed inside the stadium gates.
