Mushtaq says sorry for World Cup debacle Lahore | April 05, 2007 1:08:52 PM IST
The Pakistan cricket team's assistant coach Mushtaq Ahmad has said that he is ready to apologise to the nation for the team's early exit from the World Cup. "There is no excuse for the poor performance which has really disappointed the nation and I can only apologize to public for that," Mushtaq was quoted by the Dawn and The News, as saying. He claimed the team was prepared for the tournament, but the on field planning went awry. As regards the Bob Woolmer murder case, he denied that all-rounder Shahid Afridi had to face extraordinary interrogation over the coach's mysterious death. Mushtaq also confirmed that he had appeared before a three-member performance evaluation committee on Wednesday. Former Test cricketer Ijaz Butt headed the committee. Its two other members were Test cricketers Saleem Altaf and Salahuddin Sallu. Mushtaq replied to several questions during the hour-long session with the committee in a relaxed manner and said he was candid about his views. Later, an official statement of the committee was issued stating that Mushtaq himself made a request that he be called first since he had to leave for England in a couple of days. Former skipper Inzamam-ul-Haq, who led Pakistan in the World Cup, and a few other members of the squad are set to appear before the committee on Thursday. The committee has to complete its report within the next 30-days. (ANI)
