England's Lewis leaves World Cup, Broad in St John's Antigua | April 05, 2007 5:45:13 AM IST
England medium pacer Jon Lewis will miss the rest of the World Cup because his wife is having complications in the late stages of pregnancy. He will be replaced in England's squad by 20-year-old fast bowler Stuart Broad, who picked up five one-day caps in the home series with Pakistan last year. ''Stuart Broad performed well with the Academy squad in Australia and on England A's recent tour of Bangladesh and I am sure he will be thrilled to be joining up with the squad in the Caribbean,'' chairman of selectors David Graveney said in a statement. Broad, much quicker than Lewis, is the son of ICC match referee and former England opener Chris Broad. Lewis, who is flying home to England, had not appeared in the World Cup and was behind pacemen James Anderson, Sajid Mahmood and Liam Plunkett in the pecking order for a starting berth. ''We fully understand Jon's need to be with his wife at this time and we are grateful to the (ICC) technical committee for approving our request for a replacement player,'' Graveney added. The 31-year-old Lewis was one of a several England players fined for a late night drinking session earlier in the tournament. England were playing Sri Lanka in their second World Super Eight match today. The seven-week tournament finishes with the final in Barbados on April 28. REUTERS PDS KN2333
