Rain threatens to spoil match Georgetown Guyana | April 04, 2007 12:54:49 PM IST
Heavy rain threatened to spoil the entire day's play between South Africa and Ireland as the latter began shakily in their Super Eight league match of the cricket World Cup at the Providence stadium here today. The met office predeicted more rain in the afternoon and already the umpires have announced reduction of overs if at all the match resumes in the second half. There is very less chance of play as there has been very heavy rain although local organisers are banking on the drainage system. If the match is not completed today, it will be carried over tomorrow. Earlier, Ireland started on a shaky note on slippery ground conditions and they were 23 for one when rain stopped play. Shaun Pollock, after the hammering he got from Australia and the Sri Lanka in the earlier matches, got a chance to redeem himself and quickly removed J P Bray when the scoreboard did not even show the first run. Bray played late and the Pollock delivery found him plumb in front of the wicket and umpire Simon Taufel had no hesitation to give him out before the rain brought in the first disruption. Till the rain disruption, Pollock sent down a miserly spell of six overs giving away just 10 runs picking up one wicket. UNI MT PDS RK2220
