Woolmer died of natural causes, says Pak cricket team friend
London | April 03, 2007 1:08:53 PM IST

Pakistan cricket team coach Bob Woolmer was not murdered, but died of natural causes, a close friend of the Pakistan cricket team has claimed.

Tariq Malik, a Pakistan-born millionaire living in Jamaica, was quoted by The Telegraph as saying that he was due to host a reception for the team the night Woolmer died.

He said a doctor, who was called to the coach's room, found a diabetic testing kit on the bathroom floor next to the body. This, plus the fact that the 18-stone 58-year-old was surrounded by vomit and diarrhoea convinced him the death was due to natural causes.

"I don't buy it, for one second, that it was murder. I have had a bad reaction to a meal, with similar vomiting and diarrhoea that was seen, and I have fallen unconscious. Can you imagine a big man like Bob falling in a tiny bathroom - he would have got a bad blow. And why is it said that his blood-testing machine was on the floor? Maybe he felt he was going into a diabetic oma," Malik said.

Jamaican Police believe that Woolmer, a former England Test player, was murdered by "manual strangulation" sometime between 8.30 p.m. and 10.45 a.m. the night after his team suffered ejection from the World Cup at the hands of Ireland. A small bone in his neck was broken but there were no obvious marks on his throat.

Malik, who owns a car dealership, said he went to the hospital where Woolmer was taken.

He said: "The doctor came out and told me the shocking news that Bob had died - it was the last thing I expected to hear." (ANI)
