Jayasuriya's blitzkrieg guide Lanka to 113 run win over WI

Sanath Jayasuriya butchered the West Indian attack en route to his 25th one-day ton and then scalped three wickets as Sri Lanka routed the hosts by 113 runs in their Super Eight league match against the hosts at Providence stadium here today. In reply to the Islanders' imposing 303 for five in 50 overs, Brian Lara and Co. were bundled out for 190 in 44.3 overs. The loss, West Indies' third in succession, ties, has pushed them on the verge of being knocked out of the event with their fate depending on the results of other teams' matches. Sri Lanka, meanwhile have consolidated their position with four points after recovering from a loss at the hands of South Africa and they have one man to thank -- the redoubtable Jayasuriya. Unsually circumspect in the beginning, Man of the Match Jayasuriya transformed into his destructive best as he belted the bowlers all over the park for his 101-ball 115. The southpaw sent the ball 10 times to the fence and four times over it and together with skipper Mahela Jayawardene (82), structured an almost run-a-ball 173-run partnership for the third wicket after Powell and Ian Bradshaw struck early to leave the Lankans struggling at at 35 for two inside the nine overs. Late flurry by Tilakratne Dilshan (39 off 22 balls) and Chamara Silva (23) saw the Lankans crossing the 300-run mark. The West Indian reply, on the other hand, never really took off much to the disappointment of a packed crowd. Only Shivnaraine Chanderpaul with a well made 76 stood tall among the ruins while others only flattered to decieve. The chase began on a poor note and off-color Chris Gayle was soon sent back by maverick Lankan paceman Lasith Malinga for 10. Promoted to open the innings, Dwayne Bravo was a flash in the pan and made quick 21 before playing Chaminda Vaas on to the stumps. Much depended on Brian Lara, mired in a controversy with selectors, but the skipper fell to some wonderful wicketkeeping by Kumar Sangakkara who stumped the left hander off Vaas for two.
