Dhoni avoids media in Kolkata
Kolkata | April 02, 2007 7:15:02 PM IST

His angry fans might have chopped off the mane but Mahendra Singh Dhoni still sports it. However, the cricketer's style statement, complete with long hair and dapper red sport shirt, did not hide the agony of a Caribbean nightmare at the Eden Gardens here Monday.

Mahi, as he is fondly called, paused between nets while preparing with teammates for Jharkhand's Twenty-20 tie here on Tuesday.

He bowled at the nets and kept stumps for a while, before heading in for batting. The fierce strokeplay was there, the delicate cuts glittered in mid-day sun, but the smile was gone as he avoided talking to the media.

Coach Venkat Ram said: "He is very disappointed. He wants to work hard and make amends. He just wants to score runs and very quickly."

Dhoni practised for about 90 minutes, took a quick shower and then headed for the bus.

The fiery batsman had a poor run in the World Cup averaging less than 20.

Dhoni has not returned to his hometown Ranchi. Angry fans had attacked his house under construction there while many, who had started sporting long hair after Dhoni, clipped it to protest his poor show in the World Cup.
