Chappell failed to improve India's fielding: Nair
Thiruvananthapuram | April 02, 2007 2:15:02 PM IST

Former Indian cricket board official S.K. Nair Monday said coach Greg Chappell failed to improve the fielding standards of the Indian team and that proved crucial in their World Cup debacle.

"No doubt Chappell boosted the morale of the team by his professional approach and by being a strict disciplinarian. One weakness of Chappell is that he has not been able to do much in the area of fielding," Nair told IANS.

It was during Nair's tenure as secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that the former Australian captain was selected as the coach of the Indian team.

"Excuses cannot be given for fielding like batting and bowling. In batting any good batsman can get out to a good ball. But despite the presence of many youngsters, fielding was a grey area," said Nair.

On whether India needs a foreign coach, Nair said: "I am sure that BCCI will make a judicious decision on this count because the game has to go on. I only want that there should be no hasty actions."
