Organisers upset over reports of 'unsafe' stands St. John's (Antigua) | April 01, 2007 3:15:06 PM IST
Local World Cup organising committee officials here have refuted media reports that a temporary stand was closed because it was considered "unsafe" during Wednesday's Super Eight match between West Indies and Australia at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Ground. The Local Organising Committee (LOC) officials said that the three temporary stands on the eastern side of the stadium had been closed because of the "excessive mud and water" as a result of rain the previous day. "A decision was made to temporarily close the east stand, as the excessive mud and water would make it precarious for the fans and staff to use the metal staircase," a LOC statement said Saturday. "Ticketing was done to relocate affected persons and this was a smooth operation, with no complaints. The matter was resolved the same evening by the site manager and his team placing stones in front of the area and the stand was re-opened for the second match on Wednesday, March 28. "Contingency plans are in place should we need to relocate persons due to the weather. (IANS)
