Three arrested for online cricket betting in Kolkata
Kolkata | March 31, 2007 8:15:05 PM IST

Three people including an alleged cricket bookie were arrested Saturday by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of West Bengal for running an online cricket betting racket in Kolkata.

Pravin Kocher, Anil Bagaria and Rajesh Agarwal were nabbed red-handed from a building at Baguihati in North 24 Parganas, adjacent to Kolkata.

Four laptops, six mobile phones and documents related to cricket betting were confiscated from the flat from where they used to operate the online racket.

CID sources said the trio employed latest technology for their racket. They used laptops and mobile phones and used to conduct monetary transactions through hawala dealers.

The CID officials, who had been tipped off about their suspicious activities in the area, carried out a secret operation to catch the racket.

The officials also ran a combing operation in several places like Burrabazar and Science City area in Kolkata.

"After primary investigation we came to know that they were only involved in cricket betting, not in match fixing," Rajiv Kumar, deputy inspector general of police (operation) of CID, told IANS.

He said the CID was probing into other aspects of the case.

"It will take some more time to say who are involved in this online betting racket. But they operated the network online with the help of hawala dealers and bank channels," he said. (IANS)
