(Former member of 1983 World Cup winning team)

The more I watch New Zealand the more I admire their cricket. No stars, no hype and no over-expectations.

Cricket can be a pleasant experience if you can pursue it without the pressures that come with the game in the sub-continent.

Pressure, I say this with experience, works either way. It can break an individual or a team and can also bring out the best out of you. At the international level, class and talent rarely bow to pressure and New Zealand is a fine example of collective strength carrying the team to great heights.

They don't make stars, they make players. The 2007 World Cup will make a new statement on cricket. The intensity is beginning to make an impact and one can see how changes have affected the game. The big teams have begun to acknowledge the threat that comes from the weaker oppositions and it is indeed good for the game that Ireland and Bangladesh have earned a place in the Super Eights.

New Zealand has always been an under-rated team. From the time the likes of Richard Hadlee and Martin Crowe strode the international circuit, the team has played consistently good cricket but the top slot has remained elusive for reasons I find difficult to identify.

I remember reading sometime ago that New Zealand was a team of under-achievers. I would tend to agree with that observation to some extent because the team always promises but does not finish the job.
