ICC charmed by St. Kitts organising committee Basseterre (St. Kitts) | March 30, 2007 4:15:05 PM IST
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has praised the Local Organising Committee of the twin island states of St. Kitts and Nevis' for carrying off the World Cup group stage matches with elan. Donald Lockerbie, the venue development director of ICC, said the committee has set standards for others to follow. He urged the core group of organisers not to disband, asking them to remain the group that plans and manages future international games at Warner Park. He added this was important if St. Kitts and Nevis is to avoid "having to learn the art of international event management all over again". Lockerbie, who had the primary responsibility for stadium development in the Caribbean, recalled that a few years ago, he had listened to local officials sharing their vision of what the new venue would look like if the country was selected to host matches in the Cricket World Cup. Back then, he said, knowing what Warner Park looked like - with no stands for spectators, no media centre and any other trappings of an international sporting venue - some may have had difficulty sharing the vision of the local organisers headed by chairman, Charles Wilkin. Lockerbie said the inclusion of Warner Park for the six Group Stage matches is testimony to the system adopted by ICC was one of transparency that allowed St. Kitts and Nevis a fair chance of selection.
