Guyana impresses with World Cup facilities Georgetown (Guyana) | March 30, 2007 3:15:06 PM IST
The Guyanese officials have hailed the success of the first-ever World Cup match in the country as a testament to what self-belief, determination and cooperation can achieve. After successfully hosting the second match of the Super Eight stage of the World Cup between South Africa and Sri Lanka Wednesday, Guyana's Local Organising Committee (LOC) is now confident of hosting the remaining five matches of the second stage with distinction. "There have been so many positive comments which underline that all the work has paid off. It's the first match in a brand new stadium so naturally there have been some hitches. We know we can have them resolved and do even better in the matches to come," said Karan Singh, chief executive officer if the LOC. A number of fans - and even persons working on various facets of the tournament - commented on the well-organised manner in which yesterday's proceedings unfolded; noting it was the best way to respond to adversity. "I'm very pleased that everything has gone well so far. When we started it was just cane fields here at this location and all along we've had to prove that we would be ready. There have been many doubters. "So it's with a profound sense of satisfaction that I'm here today because it was not just the stadium, we've had the challenge of accommodation and making sure that Guyana could provide enough for the various persons who would be coming here," said Bharrat Jagdeo, president of Guyana.
