Kolkata votes for Bermuda for India's comeback
Kolkata | March 25, 2007 8:15:07 PM IST

It was not the time to cheer for Team India but thousands of cricket crazy fans in the city Sunday performed rituals praying for Bermuda to win over Bangladesh in the last league match of the World Cup tournament. The only reason: they want India to be back in the tournament and that can only be possible if Bangladesh loses against Bermuda Sunday.

"We still can't imagine that India is out of the Caribbean journey. Despite having a very balanced team they had to move out for their bad performance. We are sure they can prove their ability again if they are given a second chance. It's only possible if Bermuda snatches a victory against Bangladesh," said Ashok Biswas, who gathered at Tollygunge in south Kolkata to pray for Bermuda's victory against Bangladesh.

"After a humiliating defeat to Sri Lanka, this is our thin hope to get our team back in the tournament. Thus, we performed rituals and prayed to god so that Bermuda could beat Bangladesh," said Anutosh Das, a diehard supporter of Team India.

The disappointed cricket supporters of the city also shouted slogans demanding that coach Greg Chappell be sacked and criticised Rahul Dravid's captaincy in the tournament.

In Friday's match, Indian batsmen failed to chase a 255-run target set by Sri Lanka and crashed out of the World Cup with a crushing 69-run defeat in a crucial Group B encounter.

After that unexpected debacle, cricket supporters here burst out in anger and disappointment. They also burnt an effigy of Chappell.
