World Cup: Six teams book second round ticket
Kingston | March 25, 2007 1:15:20 AM IST

Six teams have qualified for the second round of the cricket World Cup and the remaining two berths will be decided after matches Saturday and Sunday.

Defending champions Australia and world No. 1 South Africa have progressed to Super Eight from Group A, Sri Lanka from Group B, New Zealand from Group C, and the West Indies and minnows Ireland from Group D.

The last two berths will be decided from the two matches Saturday and Sunday. The winner of the England-Kenya match will determine who qualifies from Group C and the result of the Bangladesh-Bermuda encounter Sunday will decide the second team from Group B.

If minnows Bermuda beat Bangladesh, three teams in Group B will have two points each. In that scenario, the team advancing to Super Eight will be decided on net run rate.

If Bermuda upset Bangladesh, India will come into picture, but will have an extremely slim chance of sneaking through.

After India's defeat by Sri Lanka Friday, Rahul Dravid's team has a net run rate of +1.21 and Bangladesh --2.00 while Bermuda have --5.00.

As per tournament rules, the teams progressing to the second round will carry the two points earned from the group match against the co-qualifier.
