Protest outside cricket selector's house in Hyderabad Hyderabad | March 24, 2007 9:15:06 PM IST
Angry over India's defeat in the World Cup match against Sri Lanka, cricket fans Saturday staged a protest outside the residence of selector Venkatapathy Raju. Dozens of fans gathered outside the residence of Raju at Bowenpalli in Secunderabad Saturday evening and burnt his effigy to vent their ire against the team's pathetic performance. They shouted slogans like 'Raju down down'. The protestors dispersed after police arrived on the scene. Policemen were deployed outside the house as Raju's family members sought protection following the demonstration. "We were really scared. For a moment it looked they will attack the house," said Raju's sister Shanti. Raju was not present in the house. She said there were only women in the house and they were all scared by the protest. Raju, a former Test player, is one of the five members in selection committee and he represents the southern zone. Meanwhile, angry fans held protest demonstrations at different places in the city. They burnt effigies of the team members and raised slogans against them. "Our players should learn how to play cricket from our women's team," said one of the protestors at a demonstration organised by right-wing Bajrang Dal. (IANS)
