Coroner calls for inquest into Woolmer murder
Kingston (Jamaica) | March 24, 2007 1:15:06 PM IST

The coroner here has instructed that an inquest with a jury be held into the murder of late Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer.

Lawmen said the coroner, who met Deputy Police Commissioner Mark Shields Friday, directed that the inquest be held as soon as possible. Officials said it has been ordered that Woolmer's body remain in Jamaica until further notice.

Woolmer's widow has been informed of this decision, they said.

Meanwhile, members and officials of the Pakistan cricket team were expected to leave Jamaica as scheduled Saturday, it was revealed. However, two team officials will remain in Kingston to look into the interests of the Woolmer family, according to the Caribbean Media Corp (CMC).

It was also disclosed that at the invitation of the Jamaica government, two officials from the government of Pakistan would arrive here Saturday to liaise with Jamaica authorities and facilitate the investigation.

Woolmer, 58, died at the University Hospital in Kingston last Sunday shortly after being discovered unconscious in his hotel room.

Police said a pathologist report concluded that the death was by manual strangulation and a murder investigation has been launched.
