Match-fixing exists in international cricket : Michael Vaughan London | March 24, 2007 12:16:08 PM IST
England cricket captain Michael Vaughan feels that match fixing exists in international cricket, and adds that it will be very hard to eradicate the menace from the `gentleman''s'' game. "If I''m honest then, yes, I think it (match fixing) does go on. I have never experienced it in my team or players that I''ve played against, but my gut feeling is that there is still some kind of corruption in the game. "I haven''t studied it but there are bad things I''ve seen in certain passages of games. It''s very hard to clear the whole of cricket from match-fixing," The Daily Mail quoted Vaughan, as saying. Vaughan was speaking just days after Bob Woolmer''s death, which many in cricket circles feel, was the result of a likely expose on match-fixing by the former Pakistan cricket coach. "We have got a job to do and it is vital that we have our minds right. It won''t be easy as you have to remember that someone has been murdered and we are all thinking of his family," Vaughan said. While the World Cup continued under a pall of gloom, England''s security procedures and those of other teams were being reviewed. Vaughan said: "I am sure they will tighten our security, but I don''t feel threatened at all and we are very pleased with the way we have been looked after here." The skipper is convinced that it is right that the World Cup should go on as planned. "I hope this goes on to be an unbelievable World Cup with the best team winning the tournament, but everyone will always remember this World Cup for one incident and rightfully so," added the captain, whose team will wear black armbands and observe a minute''s silence against Kenya. Former South Africa fast bowler Allan Donald was an isolated voice in saying that the tournament should come to a halt. He said: "I just don''t know how this World Cup can continue under the shadow of what has happened. My personal opinion would be to stop but, knowing Bob, he would have wanted it to go ahead." (ANI)
