Shivnarine Chanderpaul smashed a fine century as West Indies brushed aside minnows Ireland by eight wickets in a Group D rain-interrupted World Cup match here Friday to continue their march.

Both teams have progressed to the second round, but the West Indies are carrying forward two crucial points to Super Eight. Teams are carrying the points earned against the co-qualifiers from their particular groups as per the tournament rules.

First the bowlers did a good job to restrict Ireland to 183 for eight wickers in 48 over allowed by rains, and then Chanderpaul scored 102 off 113 balls (10x4s, 3x6s) Ramnaresh Sarwan 36 to steer the hosts home for the loss of just two wickets.

The West Indies target was readjusted to 190 runs according to the Duckworth-Leiws Method and they scored just as many at Sabina Park.

The Irish team, which stunned Pakistan and sent them crashing out of the World Cup, could not put up the same kind of performance. They will, however, be more than content to have made it to the second round to take on the likes of defending champions Australia.

Australia had beaten India in the final of the 2003 World Cup final in Johannesburg.

India, winners in 1983, crashed out of this tournament losing to 1996 champions Sri Lanka in Port of Spain before this match ended.
