Woolmer murder : two Pak team officials asked to stay back
Jamaica | March 24, 2007 10:44:32 AM IST

The Pakistan cricket team is free to go home but Jamaican authorities have ordered two Pak team officials to stay back while an inquest was conducted, local media has reported.

The PCB, however, denied that any player had been asked to stay back in the West Indies and the inquest is to be conducted in the presence of a jury at the earliest possible time.

Only two Pakistani officials will stay back in Jamaica till the inquest into his death is over.

Pak team was swabbed for DNA tests after the police confirmed on Friday that their coach Bob Woolmer was murdered.

All members of the team, which crashed out of the World Cup after two successive first round defeats to the West Indies and minnows Ireland, have already been fingerprinted after Jamaica''s Commissioner of Police Lucius Thomas disclosed that Woolmer died of asphyxia as a result of manual strangulation in his 12th floor room at Pegasus Hotel.

There is widespread speculation that a betting mafia murdered the 58-year-old former England Test player, who was found unconscious in his room Sunday morning. The police said one or more people could have committed the crime that has shaken the cricketing world.

"When they return to Pakistan, they have given a commitment to cooperate in any possible way that they can. Even if they left Jamaica, they would be in contact," Jamaica Deputy Police Commissioner Mark Shields had said earlier.

Pak team is scheduled to fly to Pakistan on Saturday. The police interviewed them prior to their departure. Everyone was spoken to individually.

All the people on the 12th floor of the hotel, where the murder took place, have been swabbed for DNA, the government official confirmed.

The official refuted claims that an arrest has been made, as reported by some television news channels.

"There are no suspects yet and no arrests have been made so far," he confirmed.

Given the nature of the investigation there will be a number of interviews, finger printing and swabbing for DNA, the official said. "We cannot say anything unless something is conclusive."

Security at the hotel has been increased to reassure guests, visitors and staff.

Woolmer''s death came less than 24 hours after Pakistan dramatically lost their second match to Ireland by three wickets at Sabina Park. Pakistan had earlier lost to the West Indies.
