Kingston | March 23, 2007 12:06:21 PM IST

Jamaica Police on Friday finally confirmed that that Bob Woolmer, the coach of the Pakistani cricket team, was murdered.

Police said that according to second post-mortem report Woolmer was strangled to death in his room at Jamaica Pegasus Hotel. His death was due to asphyxia as a result of manual strangulation.

"The official report from the pathologist states that Woolmer's death was due to asphyxia as a result of manual strangulation. In these circumstances, the matter of Woolmer's death is now being treated by the Jamaican police as murder," statement issued by the Jamaican Police said.

Earlier, police had termed the circumstances in which Woolmer died as 'suspicious'.

As it was too early to say, who was behind the murder and what the motive was, police said that more than one person was involved in the murder.

"Bob was a large man and it would have taken some significant force to subdue him. At this stage, we don't know how many people were there in the room. It could be one or more people involved in the murder," said Deputy Commissioner of Jamaican Police Mark Shields at a press conference.Shields also said that Pakistani Cricket Team was not being stopped from leaving Jamaica, but both the ICC and Pakistan Team had said that they would cooperate in the investigation.

Besides questioning players, police also took their fingerprints for investigation.

Police also said that security system at the hotel where Woolmer was found dead on Sunday would be investigated.

Jamaican Police have also set up two hotlines for anyone to give information that could lead to cracking of the murder.

On Thursday, Shields had denied media reports that Woolmer may have been strangulated and described it as 'media speculation'.

Radio Jamaica had quoted an unnamed reporter as saying that the coach may have been strangulated.

In the beginning, police had said that the former Test cricketer may have been poisoned and strangulated. (ANI)
