Total recall: India's 1983 World Cup triumph New Delhi | February 24, 2007 1:15:05 PM IST
Making a mockery of the 66-1 odds on an Indian win in the 1983 final, Kapil Dev's team stunned the West Indies by 43 runs to create one of biggest upsets of all time to win the World Cup and 20,000 pounds in London. When the bookmakers gave no chance to India, a team packed with the bits-and-pieces players, they successfully defended 183 and bowled out the Clive Lloyd-led twice champions for 140 with eight overs to spare at Lord's June 25. Mohinder Amarnath was adjudged the Man of the Match in both the semi-finals and final. Kapil led from the front as he smashed an unbeaten 175 in a crucial match against Zimbabwe. The triumph started an unprecedented obsession for the game in India. The craze has only spread and intensified with the passage of time and taken gigantic proportions even as India go into their ninth World Cup in the West Indies starting March 11.
