'Ganguly must fire if India want to win World Cup'
Kolkata | February 22, 2007 8:15:06 PM IST

Sourav Ganguly will give India the kind of start the team needs to win the World Cup in the West Indies next month, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar said here Thursday.

"Sourav Ganguly needs to fire if India want to win the World Cup," Gavaskar said.

The former India captain was here to release the book "Sourav Ganguly: Maharaja of Cricket" penned by renowned journalist Debashis Dutta.

"He needs to give India the kind of start they need to bring home the World Cup. We need him to play a solid innings at the start of the innings," he said.

Terming Ganguly an excellent captain and player, Gavaskar said: "The Ganguly factor has worked wonders for Bengal. Bengal has been passionate about cricket in this part of the country, but there were not many coming into the national side from here. But with Ganguly that is gone."

"We have a young brigade of cricketers from Bengal who, if given a proper chance, will shine for India," he said.

Continuing on the topic he went on to say that it was not only important to represent India, but represent successfully.

"A cricketer is remembered only when he represents the country successfully.Sourav has done exactly that," Gavaskar added.

Talking about a similarity between Ganguly and himself, he said: "We both share the same passion for the game. He is much more successful than me as a captain, but as far as our commitment to the game is concerned we are on the same level. But then again there is a difference in attitude and approach."

Then oina lighter vein he added: "We both are Cancerians and share the initials SG. So the commonality continues."

The book is a pictorial monograph that presents the life and times of Ganguly till his recall in South Africa last year. (IANS)
