1980 - Robbie Keane is born. The Irish striker plays at the 2002 World Cup finals for Ireland, where the side advances into the second round after finishing second in a group, which included Cameroon, Germany and Saudi Arabia. They lose to Spain in the round of 16. Keane scored three goals in the four matches.

1982 - The first match to be decided by a penalty shoot-out is played between West Germany and France at the semi-final stage in Spain. Germany begin a run that sees them win four penalty shoot-outs in a row by winning 5-4. The Germans go on to lose the final against Italy.

1982 - Alain Giresse becomes the first player to score from the penalty spot during a penalty shoot-out as he puts France ahead against Germany in the semi-final match played in Sevilla. Germany go on to win the shoot out 5-4.

1990 - Germany win their third World Cup title with a 1-0 victory over Argentina. The only goal of the game was scored from the penalty spot five minutes from the end by Andreas Brehme. The victory sees Franz Beckenbauer become the first person in World Cup history to captain and coach a World Cup-winning side.

1998 - French defender Laurent Blanc is sent off in France's semi-final victory against Croatia. The Les Bleus win the game 2-1 to advance to the final, but Blanc is ruled out of the championship match after elbowing Slaven Bilic. There is some consolation as France go on to beat Brazil 3-0 in the final.
