Baichung Bhutia to campaign for information act New Delhi | June 04, 2006 3:15:06 PM IST
India's football captain Baichung Bhutia will launch an awareness campaign on the Right to Information Act in Nagaland, the organisers said Sunday. "Baichung Bhutia is huge celebrity here. And we could not have thought of a better person than him to spread awareness on the Right to Information Act," said Pusuka Hwomi, president of the Naga Students' Federation (NSF), the apex body of all Naga student unions of the country. "The people, specially the youths, are not fully aware of the act. Bhutia will come here to encourage the people to know the issues related to the act," Hwomi told IANS over phone from Nagaland capital Kohima. The mercurial forward is expected to reach Kohima Monday on a two-day visit, he said. The statewide campaign is being organised by the NSF in collaboration with Youthnet, a youth organisation. Hwomi said 50 students from all colleges in Nagaland would attend the awareness drive. Bhutia, who hails from the northeastern state of Sikkim, was last month named as best player and best forward in the 10th National Football League. The Right to Information Act 2005 is a watershed legislation, seen as a crucial law for the promotion of transparency and accountability from the government. The RTI Act allows citizens to demand information (in the form of records, documents, samples, orders etc) from the government regarding any government department or office. The provision of a penalty clause also reduces the chances of denial of granting information or giving incomplete information on part of government officials. However, central intelligence and security agencies are exempted from the purview of this act. (IANS)
