Unique Identification Cards by next year, says Nilekani
Bhopal |Thursday, 2009 5:35:06 PM IST

The government would roll out the first set of Unique Identification Cards (UIDs) in the next 12-18 months, Unique Identification Authority of India Chairman Nandan Nilekani has said.

"The cards, the first set of which would be introduced next year, would be helpful in nation's security and identifying beneficiaries of various government sponsored schemes," Nilekani, co-founder of IT bellwether Infosys, said while making a video presentation on UIDs at the state secretariat here Wednesday evening.

On the salient features of the UIDs, Nilekani said that its introduction will also help in ensuring that the benefits of various schemes and development programmes reach out to the actual beneficiaries by establishing their identity along with taking care of issues pertaining to national security and census.

Further, the introduction of the system would also help check the practice of forgery at various levels, he said.

During the presentation, Nilekani also held discussion with senior officers of various departments on the possibilities of effective application of the UID in respect of various departmental schemes and various beneficiary-oriented programmes and replied to their queries.

Nilekani said that Madhya Pradesh is a pioneer state in respect of application of information technology.

"With this objective, the UID system would prove to be useful in establishment of e-governance in the state", he said.

"Registrars would be appointed to look after the preparations and implementation of the scheme for the cards at state level," he said.
