Urine could signal sleeping sickness London | May 10, 2008 12:01:13 AM IST
An international team of researchers said urine and blood tests could be used to diagnose deadly sleeping sickness in Africa. The report by British, U.S. and Swiss scientists, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, said sleeping sickness, also known as human African trypanosomiasis, is usually fatal if it is not diagnosed and treated in time. It is passed to humans through a bite from an infected tsetse fly. Laboratory tests show the infection creates distinct metabolic fingerprints in the blood and urine that are visible in the blood as early as one day after infection, Imperial College London said in a release. The researchers said they hope the findings lead to the development of a fast and accurate test that would allow people to be tested and treated more quickly, improving their chances of survival.
