A majority of young working women in urban India are putting off plans to start a family as they put career and professional ambitions ahead of motherhood, according to a just released survey by apex industry body ASSOCHAM ahead of International Mother's Day on May 13. The Associated Chambers of Commerce and India (ASSOCHAM), under the aegis of ASSOCHAM Social Development Foundation (ASDF), carried out a random survey of about 1,200 married, young full-time working women without children and about 800 stay-at-home mothers in the age group of 24-30 years at urban centers of Ahmedabad, Bangalore,Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai and Pune during March-April. Over half (650) of married, young working women in the aforesaid urban centres said they have shelved plans to start a family as career advancement and higher education is their priority and cannot sacrifice the same to raise kids, highlights the survey. 'Ambitious working women in India are not willing to give up their career for the sake of family as they are apprehensive about dealing with stress and emotional distress associated with issues of work/life balance,' said D S Rawat, secretary general of ASSOCHAM,while releasing the findings of the survey. 'Household chores, social commitments and other obligations make raising kids a delicate balancing act for women with successful careers,' he said. About 10 per cent of the surveyed said they work to lead a better lifestyle and need to accumulate enough wealth before they start a family and cope up with rising costs of childcare. About 200 respondents from the working women category said they have put off their plans to have a baby as it would disfigure their physical appearance. About 70 of these said they are too young to be a mother. However, about 20 per cent of these said they have taken a mutual decision with their spouse that first they want to accomplish their career goals and then would start a family to be able to justify with both the roles effectively. Many working women said they work primarily because of sheer passion for their career and to hone their organizational skills. About 220 respondents from this category said they have no qualms in going on the family way and becoming a mother would make them feel happier and fulfilled and are not fearful of the effect motherhood might have on their career. The batting maestro said it was his son's own choice to start playing cricket and wants the youngster to enjoy being on the field instead of thinking about the number of hours he has practised. 'As long as he is in love with cricket, it's fine. Then you don't look at your watch or count the number of hours you've practiced. It's the sheer joy and satisfaction of being on the field. And that's what I want (for him). 'I believe cricket starts from your heart and then it travels up to your brain as you grow older. First you have to be in love with the game, and my son is in love with cricket,' Tendulkar said in an interview to TIME magazine. Tendulkar said it is 'unfortunate' that he cannot take his kids out for normal things like evening walks, so he looks forward to holidays with his family. 'In Mumbai, if I had to go out and be a normal father, it's not possible. We go on holidays and that is the time when I look to spend as much time with them as possible,' he said. He said he plays with his son in Mumbai in a 'controlled environment.' Tendulkar said he has passed on to his children the advice his father gave him that 'while cricket would be temporary in their lives, they should always try and be good people. So try and be a good person'. People will appreciate that even after you've stopped playing. I try and tell my children the same thing.' UNI XC TBA BD1920 NNNN

'Mr Pawar should put his prestige at stake to get maximum assistance for the drought-affected people of Maharashtra,' Mr Thackeray said in an editorial in party mouthpiece 'Saamana'. 'The entire cabinet of Maharashtra returned empty-handed from Delhi. An all-party team led by Mr Chavan met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh over drought but what was the outcome,' he asked. Neighbouring states like Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka were also affected by drought but those governing Maharashtra lack the determination of their counterparts in these states to fight drought, he pointed. 'The question is, have our ruling politicians grasped the gravity of the drought. Despite having ministers like Pawar, Vilasrao Deshmukh and Sushilkumar Shinde in the central ministry, it is unfortunate that there is no follow-up of the state's demand for drought relief,' the Sena chief added.
