Switzerland to help India understand Himalayan glaciers

Describing the Himalayan ecosystem as vital to the ecological security of the sub-continent, Ambassador of Switzerland Dr Linus von Castelmur today inaugurated a new Capacity Building Programme on Himalayan Glaciology.

The programme is aimed at strengthening of institutional and human capacities in the field of glaciology and related areas.

It has been conceptualised and supported by the Swiss Agency for Development Cooperation (SDC) and the Climate Change Programme of Department of Science and Technology (DST) of India.

The four week Capacity Building Programme is organised by the School of Environmental Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).

A total of 30 students with experience and exposure to the diverse field of glaciology have been selected. Faculties from 22 Universities and Institutions in India and Switzerland will conduct the programme.

The Swiss Ambassador said in the last few years, there have been concerns regarding the health of the Himalayan galciers, as some crucial questions had been raised on impact of climate change, so there was an urgent need of improving the understanding of climate science and their impact on these galciers.
