The Ladakh region remains cut off from the rest of the country as the 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh national highway was closed due to snowfall. The upper reaches in Kargil also experienced light snowfall last evening, resulting in drop in the temperature. The highway, the lifeline to the Ladakh region, remained closed Superintendent of Police (SP) Kargil Ajaz Ahmad told UNI over phone and declined the media reports that highway was reopened. From Kargil side, the accumulated snow had been cleared, however, from Sonamarg side it will take few more days, he said. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway, has put into service sophisticated machines and men to clear the snow, the SP said. There were about two km road strip which had to be cleared of snow, he said, adding it would take some more days before the highway was put through. The highway was closed in December last year due to snowfall and slippery road conditions, particularly in Zojila area. He said Zanaskar also remained cut off from the Kargil due to snowfall and it will take another month to put through the Zanaskar road. A traffic police official in Srinagar also denied that the highway has been reopened. ''We have no such information,'' he told UNI. -- (UNI) -- 30DR32.xml
